Imagine a vast and beautiful ship, strong and unsinkable, designed to weather any storm. This ship represents Jesus, who is eternal life (1 John 5:11-12). When we come to faith, it's like being invited aboard this ship. As long as we remain on the ship, we are secure, safe, and assured of reaching the promised destination—a place of eternal life.
Some people view salvation on an individual level, believing that each of us receives a personal lifeboat, guaranteed by God to reach the destination no matter what. They may think that once they have this lifeboat, they are secure, whether they stay on the ship or not. But the truth is, there’s no security outside the ship. The lifeboat alone cannot withstand the storms; it’s the ship—Jesus—that is our salvation.
Our security isn’t about having our own individual lifeboat; it’s about staying on the ship. As long as we remain in Christ (John 15:4-6), we are eternally secure because He is eternal life. But if we choose to abandon the ship, to step away from Jesus, we’re no longer in the place of safety and salvation.
Eternal security is not an individual guarantee detached from Jesus. Instead, it’s a corporate reality found in Christ alone. Our salvation and eternal life are secure as long as we stay in Him, the One who holds and sustains all who are aboard.
